Getting ready for conference
on October 20th, 2009, by TonHi all,
Silence here… only means good stuff of course! We’ve got already so much great stuff to show, but we’re saving it all up for the next sunday Blender Conference talk. A bit of a tease is always more fun π
After the conference we will be much more open, and just post our amazing discoveries right away. The only thing we’ll be reluctant with is revealing the full story.
What’s everyone working on?
- David concept-arts the Dragon. (We already have a final girl, she’s awesome!)
- Colin works on the conference presentation, and with script writer on final tweaks. We want to cut some in the film… it was getting just too much. Last week’s storyboarding and crappymatic edits reveiled it too.
- Angela is modeling the final character and making facial rig test setups.
- Soenke continues shader testing, he did hair last week, now trying eyebrows and other facial hair.
- Nathan is at home for his bro’s wedding, but he did already make a cool 2.5 rig last week. He’ll be back tomorrow.
- Lee is using this rig now to make a fight shot test.
- Campbell & Brecht are both fixing a gazillion of bugs, and run in and out the studio all the time to get them artists working with 2.5!
- And me? I managed to get Blender compile again today, on my 5 year old mac, and for first time in over a month! Not that I can code now, have to work on the talks on the conference too… π
Laters!

First! (I’m so sorry!)
I’m really excited. π
October 20th, 2009 at 7:11 pm
Woo hoo! Dang, I wish I could make the conf. Also wish I could see some of those tests, like the fight scene and hair shaders!
October 20th, 2009 at 7:43 pm
“A bit of a tease is always more fun” π You have no idea about the pain and distress you are causing! It seems like an eternity from the last update! π I’m glad to hear you guys are still alive and kicking!
Looking very much forward to the stuff that will be revealed at the conference…
October 20th, 2009 at 7:53 pm
It’s been quite a long time since I’ve been on Durian site… seems like project is running well π I’m really excited about this… and looking forward for your next post. Keep it up! π
October 20th, 2009 at 7:54 pm
that makes it even more painful that I won’t be able to make it to the conference this year. Can’t wait to see that stuff on the web tho!
π
October 20th, 2009 at 8:11 pm
Don’t forget: there’ll be a stream of the talk available too! Can’t predict yet when we post all stuff here for download, knowing Blender Conferences, that might well take some days before everyone’s back to normal π
October 20th, 2009 at 9:15 pm
Not going to this conf = bad desicion π little money and no time.
Please don’t cut the story more than you absolutely have to, I don’t care if it takes an extra month or two to complete.
October 20th, 2009 at 9:34 pm
Wot! Im even more excited to go the conference now π too bad I’m gonna miss the keynote, got a biochemistry test that morning
October 20th, 2009 at 9:36 pm

Oh well. Keep up the great work Durian Team! Excited to see the work so far after the Conf!

October 20th, 2009 at 11:07 pm
Wow π I find myself often refreshing this site, just to read more about durian… and now I’m not disappointed
October 20th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
I’m going to be away from my internet connection during the conf, so I hope it won’t be too long before the streams will be made downloadable.
So as long as I’m hoping, I hope Brecht’s secret project will out at the conf too π
October 20th, 2009 at 11:28 pm
Will there be a live stream of the conference like last year?
October 20th, 2009 at 11:53 pm
“Bro”, “laters”, Ton is that really you…….”dude”…lol, good stuff. Thanks for the update..funny how time (and lack of funds) can creep up on us and make our technology, primitive isn’t it…I think of my computer as “new”, but I realised after reading your update that my computer is now nearly 4 years old….”whince…ouch”.
October 21st, 2009 at 1:05 am
“Soenke continues shader testing, he did hair last week, now trying eyebrows and OTHER FACIAL HAIR”…perhaps a moustache? π
“Lee is using this rig now to make a fight shot test”… Bravo!!! Bruce Lee is the best in fight action !!! π
Good luck for all Durian team !!!

Well, I hope that the rigs in the female character female parts jigs as she fight through out the ten minus of the film. I edited the earlier version of this statement. let keep it clean.
October 21st, 2009 at 3:31 am

really excited
i cant wait
October 21st, 2009 at 3:33 am
ohh the pain
Top promiss us to post every day and with a photo or a new feature.

I just recently watched the project Orange (aka Elephants Dream) “Making Of Documentary,” so I have a vivid mental picture of what you mean by a “crappymatic.” (((YIKES!))) That said, it made reference to several Blender features that we now take for granted which were developed during Orange. It was a great reminder of just how much these projects help improve Blender. I would highly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it. It can be found on the page:

Go Durian!
October 21st, 2009 at 7:51 am
MTracer was me…I have no idea why it comes up on my PC as you(with your info as well), but this is a problem……that post was me referring to my old computer and Ton’s odd slang….weird. I had to delete it again writing this post.
October 21st, 2009 at 8:43 am
@Ton: work impending so won’t be there unfortunately. Can we expect some little hint from Brecht’s secret project too at the conference ?
October 21st, 2009 at 9:02 am
I guess that’s Ton getting into the whole “adolescents” thing. π
The reply name switch happens to me as well; probably a glitch with WordPress.
October 21st, 2009 at 9:40 am
of course its ton , he knows whats up ;D
October 21st, 2009 at 12:08 pm
@JustinBarrett: The same thing happened to me the last project as well. Someone else’s info was used instead of mine. I hope it doesn’t happen too often. As D says, probably a glitch with the software.
Anyway, Ton I am glad you guys are getting ready for the conference. Priorities are important. Good luck to al the team, you are making a lot of us wish we were watching right over your shoulder at the moment.
October 21st, 2009 at 12:52 pm
Yeah, same here with the name swap. I felt quite honoured to be given the chance to post as Matt Ebb last time I visited… didn’t though.
October 21st, 2009 at 3:21 pm

October 23rd, 2009 at 11:19 am
Watching you now, Ton, live over the internet! Got some applause on Durian! π The sound is sort of screwy, though.
Can’t wait till Sunday.
October 23rd, 2009 at 12:19 pm

October 24th, 2009 at 10:10 pm

October 25th, 2009 at 3:15 pm
Can you believe I missed the presentation? :@ Now I’ll have to wait four hours till the repeat broadcast! I hope the video stream will be acceptable…
October 25th, 2009 at 7:33 pm
No! The first replay is immersive domes again!?
:O:O:O:O:O:O:O:O
Oh, it’s going to be a long – potentially – 10 hours…
October 25th, 2009 at 9:35 pm
Lucky me. π
The presentation was awesome! Congratulations, fellows, you guys are really doing it! π π π Great art, great renders, great models, great rigs, great script, even the crappymatic was great. π Get those reaction shots in!
So it seems like it really was “Sintel”, and my prediction about it being the Durian girl’s name from Directorial Address #1 was correct as well.
Now that it seems like we’re leaning toward fewer spoken lines, wouldn’t that mean making them spoken in Esperanto more viable? It would be great to have it discussed, so please do.
You guys… rock on. 8)

>Campbell & Brecht are both fixing a gazillion of bugs
And at amazing speed too:
Filed a bug report ([19719] segfault assigning a different mesh to object in edit mode) and 65 minutes later Campbell had it fixed.
totally amazing response time π
October 27th, 2009 at 12:13 am
Good luck Durian team!
