Durian – the final rush
on July 2nd, 2010, by beornIt’s getting close to the end and it’s all a bit busy here at the institute.
Most of the animation is completed except for some polish and effects, the render team is working overtime and the render farm is running hot enough to cook a dragon.
Here’s a timelapse video of last week’s action. It starts with our Monday morning kick off meeting and ends with the Friday weekly where we all watch the progress so far.
Enjoy!
~Beorn~
BTW, this is available in HD on YouTube
(music: “Perambulator” by Simon Leonard)

Smiling guy, right lower corner = creepy and funny! ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 12:53 pm
Lol Nathan seems to spend a lot of time making faces at the camera. ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 1:00 pm
hahahahaha look funny
mr.nathan eating dove at the river side
July 2nd, 2010 at 1:01 pm
Now we know who’s been steeling cookies from the kitchen….
well done! Funny!
Like the music too. Who is it? Is there more where that came from?
July 2nd, 2010 at 1:01 pm
The yellow little thing is so creey!! Was that an alien?! :p
July 2nd, 2010 at 1:02 pm
cool! and what about colin’s moving plate? XD
July 2nd, 2010 at 1:03 pm
Beorn, that was *awesome*, paid off so well!
Thanks for making this, nice memorial for all us durianers.
July 2nd, 2010 at 1:14 pm
Oh now that was class!! and the moving plate and rubber duck! Brilliant!
July 2nd, 2010 at 1:31 pm
Very Koyaanisqatsi. I like!
July 2nd, 2010 at 1:44 pm
Nathan, it was cool!
July 2nd, 2010 at 1:49 pm
Hiehie, I want this on DVD :>
July 2nd, 2010 at 1:57 pm
Great ๐ It definitely have to be on the DVD !
July 2nd, 2010 at 2:29 pm
That is so awesome, and a great choice of music! ๐ I suppose we’re going to miss the big team as this wraps up. ๐
Great stuff.
July 2nd, 2010 at 3:08 pm
Great video!
What camera have you used?
Luckily there is only one Dutchman in the whole building, because Netherlands-Brazil would put everything on hold! ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 3:47 pm
J: This was all shot with a Nikon D5000.
The temperature in the render room is hovering around 33.5 celcius. Since the maximum limit is 34, we’re starting to get a bit nervous!
(looks like Ton and I replied at the same time… it is indeed hotter in the studio. Just as well we have so many Aussies here!)
July 2nd, 2010 at 3:19 pm
What temperature does the thermometer of the render room indicate with this hot wheater?
July 2nd, 2010 at 3:28 pm
nice lol
July 2nd, 2010 at 3:46 pm
Outside temperature here is 33 degrees or more.
We have shut down 8 nodes to keep the render farm temperature acceptable. For some reason it now feels cooler in the farm room than in the studio ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 4:35 pm
u’re a good and funny team xD nathan is allmost allways smiling at the camera maybe thats the reason he’s not an actor but blenders “comedian ^^” (or baybe its just his skills with blender)
July 2nd, 2010 at 4:35 pm
i mean maybe
July 2nd, 2010 at 4:37 pm
Haha Most brilliant…
This is actually one of the main reasons I use Blender…
The team just make you feel at home with these small details… ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 4:56 pm
Haha Nathan seems tobe very busy ๐ studying dovemovements on living animals ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 5:02 pm
Nice to see you’re having fun ๐
Hope to be able to come to the blender institue one day… ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 5:19 pm
So… nathan smiled at the camera all day, or is it just me?
No cheek or neck pain after all day of staring at one point?…
July 2nd, 2010 at 5:29 pm
Dude that was awesome. Funny as hell with Nathan doing his usual antics, but great to watch and remember what type of environment you guys are working under.
Only thing that scared me, no not the stuffed animals, but Ben’s face at the end of the shot. It almost looks as if he is ready to eat someones head for breakfast with those unfortunately timed shots. I did notice Ben you were working on some fire shots throughout last week. Is the dragon finally going to be billowing smoke in the movie? Or is that too much of a give away?
Keep it up guys, not long now, and then the big presentation in September… Seems a bit too far away to wait, but it’ll come around soon enough I suppose.
Here is to almost a year at the task guys.
July 2nd, 2010 at 5:34 pm
from 1:48. last scene. who’s that girl behind tom?
July 2nd, 2010 at 5:34 pm
sorry. behind toN
July 2nd, 2010 at 5:41 pm
Great work guys! Is there anything that can be done to lower the temperature or would the only option to be buying some kind of expensive cooling system?
July 2nd, 2010 at 5:54 pm
Very fun ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 6:10 pm
wo252: we frequently have guests turn up to weeklies. It can be fun or it can be dull, depending on which week they turn up.
Speaking of weeklies… it’s time for a weekly right now!
July 2nd, 2010 at 6:21 pm
Netherlands won ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 6:29 pm
It’s very well edited and a delightful experience to the eyes and ears!
Like it very much!
July 2nd, 2010 at 6:41 pm
Haha, that’s a nice vid ๐
And some nice little gimicks too ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 6:47 pm
Cool vid
July 2nd, 2010 at 7:01 pm
Brilliant stuff – gotta love Nathan mugging at the camera nearly all the time
Thanks!
July 2nd, 2010 at 7:08 pm
July 2nd, 2010 at 7:09 pm
Nathan is so funny, Durian rocks
July 2nd, 2010 at 7:12 pm
Use big icicles to cool the render room, it could help maybe… ^^
Good stuff !
Keep it up guys ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 7:40 pm
What happened to Angela?
Or maybe she’s really, really good at staying out of the camera since she hasn’t been featured in a long time…
July 2nd, 2010 at 7:55 pm
Brilliant work, Beorn!
July 2nd, 2010 at 8:15 pm
Great video! It seems that this is a very close, open environment for working, basically all gathered around one table. Any thoughts/opinions on this setup?
July 2nd, 2010 at 9:01 pm
Anybody noticed that Nathan has a shaved chin while he’s sitting on the landing stage? ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 9:07 pm
… is it me, or is Brecht the only one keeping the place clean? Or do you guys/gals take turn clearing the table?
July 2nd, 2010 at 9:45 pm
Belgians like to keep their stuff ”proper” (that’s also a Dutch word, but typically Flemish) ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 10:46 pm
Obviously all future movie projects need to render during the winter to allow nice renderfarm cooling ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 10:54 pm
Perhaps, but a studio needs to be flexible. ๐
July 2nd, 2010 at 11:06 pm
haha you guys are nuts xD good luck on the final steps! I’m so looking forward to finally see this movie!
July 2nd, 2010 at 11:44 pm
I loved it! Especially Nathan’s “I’m a happy drone” mugging. Watch for mice moving on their own in some shots too. Sometimes it looks like you guys are actually working at that pace!
๐
July 3rd, 2010 at 1:41 am
Can’t stop commenting.. Nathan you’re amazing! (or it’s the magic of time-lapse editing?) Whatever may be, Nathan brings in “must needed” joy and fun while at work.
It’s a bitter-sweet moment, as the project is nearing to it’s end. We all going to miss you, Team Durian. We can only hope, that you come in altogether again next year for a much bigger project (may be a full-length feature film) ๐
July 3rd, 2010 at 9:04 am
Yes, love it ๐
I second Anonymous Coward’s question:
Where is Angela???
July 3rd, 2010 at 10:39 am
vey few girl then…get more girl in the group! ๐
(occorre creativitร femminile)
July 3rd, 2010 at 11:51 am
Angela is still very much on the team and doing great work.
July 3rd, 2010 at 1:10 pm

July 3rd, 2010 at 6:21 pm
@inken nathan’s lover? what Blender has joined together, let autodesk not separate ๐
July 3rd, 2010 at 9:21 pm
1:00 – It’s the ball I’ve sent!
July 3rd, 2010 at 10:15 pm
@Ton: 33 degrees? Really? … Here in Veracruz (Mรฉxico) we are at 34 degrees in summer =S =( =/
July 3rd, 2010 at 10:19 pm
It’s seldom that hot in The Netherlands, but WHEN it is… (especially when you can’t bear it, like me)
July 3rd, 2010 at 11:13 pm
The yellow thing that moved along the monitor is not an alien…
It’s a Psyduck. You’d know this if you knew your Pokemon.
July 4th, 2010 at 11:50 am
Lol. I hope this ends up on the dvd.
Its an extremely hot weekend here in holland. Up to 39 C here in the south. Im prety sure the farm at my work had a shutdown. But we won from Braziel ( fozyboal ) yeah. Top weekend.
July 4th, 2010 at 5:19 pm
Germany 4 x 0 Argentina
July 4th, 2010 at 5:42 pm
The best part is Nathan, at ~1.43, goofing-off while everyone else is working hard.
July 4th, 2010 at 7:38 pm
Lol… Have a close look at Ben’s facial expression at 1:45
July 4th, 2010 at 8:59 pm
That was awsome. Nathan seems reeeaaallly busy.
July 5th, 2010 at 12:08 am
You should schedule the projects so you render at winter ๐
July 5th, 2010 at 3:19 pm
really nice to see things evolving.
wait – didn’t you promise to keeep us informed about the first minute? Last post on this topic is really long ago now. Since animation is done now, and the release of the movie itself seems to last some other months, may we see some nice results on the first minute PLEASE ๐
You promised!
July 5th, 2010 at 3:30 pm
Nathan is mainly animator and… how d’you say… the animation is finished. ๐
July 5th, 2010 at 6:06 pm
Funny video. An unanimated animator ! The rubber duck seems to be more active than Nathan ! So, it will desserve a place in the credits !o)
Here in France, I’ve got 33.5ยฐC and no air cooling, so I have had to switch off my workstation. One of my two monitors is deceased yesterday and I don’t want the whole machine to follow it in the grave !o[
July 5th, 2010 at 6:38 pm
fryday it was about 35 degrees in my room.
without my huge fan next to my laptop i think he would have died… now the core is about 98/99 degrees ๐ฎ :S (almost crashtime :P)
July 5th, 2010 at 6:45 pm
Don’t you have few fans to set up?
After all you live in France, so it wouldn’t be wise to be a little more prepared? ๐
July 5th, 2010 at 6:46 pm
@cedal: Where do you come from?
July 9th, 2010 at 11:47 am
I always see this kind of thing at my dad’s work, but it looks even more awesome if blender replaces maya!
July 9th, 2010 at 8:59 pm
I think thai it would be great to release a 3d version of the movie (at list a part of it).
It will be played on all new 3d tv that you can find in every media shop.
